You raise an important issue that, for the most part, has not been directly addressed.

The answer is simple, however, and it likely is the very answer that the league will give to the Vikings. Given that tampering is impermissible in the NFL, the burden is on each team to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Why is that the case? Because everyone can use and has used the argument that the Vikings are now using.

To avoid this game, the NFL applies a different standard than might a court in our judicial system. The NFL does not necessarily presume innocence absent clear proof of guilt. Rather, circumstantial evidence often is sufficient to lead to a penalty.

In this case, the Vikings have provided strong circumstantial evidence of guilt and likely will be nailed--particularly given the NFL owners' recent agreement to beef up monitoring and punishment of tampering.

As I have written, however, the tampering charge might actually benefit the Vikings as it might facilitate a resolution of the Favre saga with Favre moving to Minnesota.

VGvikes geekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06530336385552424416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8268346.post-77182049326871418412008-07-17T10:46:00.000-05:002008-07-17T10:46:00.000-05:00What ever happened to "innocent until proven guilt...What ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? Even if the number of cell phone calls between Bevell and Favre spiked around the time of Favre's retirement, what does that prove? If I was Bevell, and Favre was my good friend and involved in a media firestorm, I would probably be calling him all the time to? I'm not so naive to think that Bevell was *definitely* not recruiting Favre, but I don't understand how the Vikes could be crucified based on circumstantial evidence.Shawn Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13986691172795163838noreply@blogger.com
