Ponder has those things and THAT is why he is the backup, not Webb.Dieyuppiescum91https://www.blogger.com/profile/17744084637889808121noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8268346.post-80319857361678819032011-08-29T23:54:39.937-05:002011-08-29T23:54:39.937-05:00DC,

Gurode not only would be an upgrade over Sullivan, he also almost certainly is an upgrade over his replacement in Dallas.

The Vikings have been allowing the notion to circulate that they are within a stone's throw of the salary cap ceiling. They are actually closer to $12-14 million below the cap. I suspect that they are hoping to extend Peterson and use that space to bring the bulk of what is certain to be a large bonus forward to 2011 (a move that gives the Vikings the option of more signings next year--if they need to sell the stadium deal--or less expenses next year--if the stadium deal is done and the team has nothing to prove to fans). No reason that the Vikings cannot extend Peterson and sign Gurode. It will be interesting to see if they attempt to do the former.

VGvikes geekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06530336385552424416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8268346.post-68774537341473981272011-08-29T19:50:49.081-05:002011-08-29T19:50:49.081-05:00VG:

As I've said several times, for where he is in his very young career, Ponder appears to be making progress toward being an NFL quarterback. So, too, however, does Webb. And the fact that Webb continues to impress and show progress over one year into his career is encouraging. The next step for Webb is to show that he can stay in the pocket and pass well from the pocket (something Ponder also needs to show). If Webb can surmount this less lofty hurdle, he should do very well in the NFL (same for Ponder). One of the primary issues in this regard, however, is the offensive line. The Vikings absolutely need to do something about that this year or they are going to lose more than one quarterback to injury.

In the even more head-shaking category for the Vikings is that both Webb and Ponder currently look more adept than Tarvaris Jackson--the purported opening day starter for the Seahawks. I'm still trying to determine whether Pete Carroll really sees something in Jackson or just hates Brad Childress so much that he wants to show that he can succeed where Childress failed.

VGvikes geekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06530336385552424416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8268346.post-16855196129375759132011-08-28T22:01:58.519-05:002011-08-28T22:01:58.519-05:00VG:

I'm not quite as sold on Webb as you are, but it did make me question my own views of Webb as a legit NFL quarterback and how analysts seem to view all inexperienced black QBs who can run as only suitable for the wildcat offence.

Last night I even heard the excellent Mike Mayock say after Webb scrambled for 40 yards that Webb "doesn't even know what he's doing yet" when he lines up behind center. The implication being that Webb's just another athletic black athlete without the "necessities" (As Al Campanis would say) to be a successful NFL quarterback

My concern with the Vikings apparent belief that Webb is only capable of being some kind of gimmick quarterback is not just that they could be missing out on a future starting QB but in doing so, they'll fail to capitalize on the sizeable trade value that comes with having two young, promising quarterbacks on your roster.

If the Vikings give Webb the opportunity to grow as more than just a wildcat QB and he improves and shows starter capability, while at the same time Ponder does the same, Minnesota could find themselves in the position the Eagles were in this offseason with Vick and Kevin Kolb.

Imagine how much the Vikes rebuilding efforts could be quickened if Webb and Ponder both look starter-worthy and the Vikings trade one of them to a quarterback needy team for a couple of high drafts picks, plus a starting corner (or offensive lineman)? Of course, if the Vikings continue to pigeon-hole Webb as a novelty QB, that scenario will never come to pass.Darren Campbellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07280352819585972328noreply@blogger.com
